Echinococcosis is the name given to a prominent silent chronic helminthes zoonotic infection caused by infection with the adult or larval stage of the dog tapeworm Echicoccous granulosus, Based on molecular characteristics, the species/strains of E. granulosus have been taxonomically revised as: E. granulosus (G1–G3), E. equinus (G4), E. ortleppi (G5), E. canadensis (G6–G10), and E. felidis. Echinococcus granulosus has been divided into several strains according to the host.
